چکیده

We develop a formal procedure for the analysis of imaging spectroscopy data, i.e., remote sensing observations of the structure of a radiation source as a function of an observed parameter (e.g., radiation wavelength, frequency, or energy) and two-dimensional location in the observation plane of the instrument used. In general, imaging spectroscopy involves inversions of both spatial and spectral information. “Traditional” approaches typically proceed by performing the spatial inversion first, and then applying spectral deconvolution algorithms on a “pixel-by-pixel” basis across the source to deduce the (line-of-sight-weighted) form of the “source function” (a function involving only physical properties of the source itself) at each location in the observation plane. However, in the special case where spatial information is encoded in the form of visibilities (two-dimensional spatial Fourier transforms of the source structure), it is advantageous, both conceptually and computationally, to reverse the order of the steps in this procedure. In such an alternative approach, the spectral inversion is performed first, yielding visibilities of the unknown source function, and then these source function visibilities are spatially transformed to yield in situ information on the source, as a function of both energy and position. We illustrate the power and fidelity of this method using simulated data and apply it to hard X-ray observations of a solar flare on 2002 April 15. We also discuss briefly its broader applicability.

Imaging through turbulence with a quadrature-phase optical interferometer.

We present an improved technique for imaging through turbulence at visible wavelengths using a rotation shearing pupil-plane interferometer, intended for astronomical and terrestrial imaging applications. While previous astronomical rotation shearing interferometers have made only visibility modulus measurements, this interferometer makes four simultaneous measurements on each interferometric b...

Fiber-Based Interferometry and Imaging

Single-mode optical fibers are playing an increasing role in astronomical interferometry, e.g., in high-accuracy visibility measurements and in nulling interferometry. However, such observing modes typically involve only small numbers of fibers. On the other hand, some recently proposed observing techniques call for arrays of single mode fibers coupled to arrays of sub-apertures within a large ...

A Data-driven Edge-preserving D-bar Method for Electrical Impedance Tomography

In Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), the internal conductivity of a body is recovered via current and voltage measurements taken at its surface. The reconstruction task is a highly ill-posed nonlinear inverse problem, which is very sensitive to noise, and requires the use of regularized solution methods, of which D-bar is the only proven method. The resulting EIT images have low spatial re...

Sparsity Averaging Reweighted Analysis (SARA): a novel algorithm for radio-interferometric imaging

We propose a novel algorithm for image reconstruction in radio interferometry. The ill-posed inverse problem associated with the incomplete Fourier sampling identified by the visibility measurements is regularized by the assumption of average signal sparsity over representations in multiple wavelet bases. The algorithm, defined in the versatile framework of convex optimization, is dubbed Sparsi...

We present computer simulations of interferometric imaging with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Astronomical MultiBEam Recombiner (AMBER) phase-closure instrument. These simulations include both the astrophysical modelling of a stellar object by radiative transfer calculations and the simulation of light propagation from the obje...
